Microsoft's real competitor out there is clearly Apple, so expect the new year to see M$ bad-mouthing Apple (via opinions from their tame journalists and on-side consulting companies) and, after that fails, some dirty tricks of the usual FUD variety. Expect to read stuff like Apple is not suitable for networking a small office or warehouse, hackers are now turning to the Mac, Apple products have a high return rate, many iPhone applications are unreliable, Apple batteries still exploding etc etc etc. Browser Breakup =============== Percentages of visits for the period 1st to 15th December 2009:- IE 60.0 (was 59.9, 60.0, 60.6, 60.6, 60.6, 62.0, 62.0, 62.3, 62.5) FF 24.1 (was 24.5, 24.8, 24.6, 24.7, 25.7, 24.2, 24.8, 24.1, 23.8, 25.9) Safari 8.6 (was 8.4, 8.1, 8.0, 7.7, 7.7, 7.2, 7.0, 7.5, 6.6, 6.0, 5.4) Chrome 3.9 (was 3.9, 4.0, 3.2, 3.5, 2.8, 3.3, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 2.2) Opera 1.5 (was 1.6, 1.5, 1.9, 1.9, 1.7, 1.9, 1.9, 1.8, 2.3, 2.4, 2.0) All Others 1.8 (was 1.7, 1.5, 1.7, 1.6, 1.5, 1.4, 1.6, 1.7, 1.9, 2.1) The total sample size was 15835 visits by humans. IE and Firefox continue their very slow decline. Search Engines Share ==================== Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for December 1st to 15th, 2009:- Google 88.0 (was 88.4, 87.7, 87.6, 87.5, 88.5, 89.4, 88.0, 87.2, 85.4) Yahoo 4.6 (was 5.5, 5.8, 6.1, 6.1, 5.8, 5.3, 6.3, 7.0, 7.5, 7.4, 6.5) Microsoft 4.0 (was 3.3, 3.9, 3.4, 3.5, 2.8, 2.3, 2.3, 2.5, 3.3, 3.2) All others 3.3 (was 2.8, 2.6, 2.9, 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, 3.4, 3.3, 3.8, 3.3) Yahoo has declined a little, and Microsoft has gained a little. The combined share is 8.6% which is less than a tenth of Google. Much of the swing to Microsoft is caused by Yahoo Image Searches which are now handled by Bing. The sample size here was 12669. You can lead the horses to water, but ===================================== ... you can't make them drink. The Bondi Beach Home Page has a picture (either 500x200 or 500x150) at the top of the main page, usually to plug future events. For example there is usually a "City-to-Surf" picture in July, and there is currently a "Christmas at Bondi" pic. From the 5th to the 15th this month there was a picture of a bus coming up Bondi Road with the sea in the background. You could click on the picture to see a larger bus picture, or click on a link and see information about the Bondi trams. This is where the web site gets a bit didactic, a bit too preachy, and has assumed that it might be good for the viewers to learn something about a subject dear to the webmaster's heart. In practice, the figures show such a hope is pure wishful thinking. The small bus picture was shown 2663 times as a component of the home page. Then only 1.6% of visitors clicked to see the larger bus picture, and just 1.2% of visitors clicked on the link to learn about trams. Sure, it's a good idea to have page about "shooting through like a Bondi tram" but only a small segment of surfers really want to see it. It's a sobering thought for webmasters and companies who believe if they have a web site then the masses will embrace their products. Actually people just go somewhere else. This concept is true in many walks of life. I have seen bands that play music which is far too demanding, difficult and complex for the average punter. The band genuinely believes the audience should be challenged. In reality, the audience stays away in droves. Especially the dancers who find the music impossible to dance to. If people really want to know about trams, they will search in Google, and there is plenty of information. In the last two weeks, 43 searches about trams came to the Bondi beach Home Page. Just for comparison, there were only 37 searches about sculpture, so once again "sculpture by the sea" is over until next year. ============================ =============================
