Latest Stats as at 4/9/2013 ============================= These figures cover the 16 day period 16/8/2013 to 31/8/2013. Big news: Microsoft has purchased Nokia's mobile phone division and the brands and 10 years of their patents. Interesting times ahead as Microsoft attempts to boost the Winphone. Improving Nokia won't be easy. For visits from mobile devices, I am seeing Apple 72%, Samsung 11%, HTC 2.0%, Nokia 1.5% and all other brands below this, starting with LG and Motorola. Operating System Market Share ============================== For the period 16th to 31st of August, these percentage figures are based on visits, with earlier figures in brackets:- Windows-7 29.9 (30.2, 30.7, 30.5, 32.2, 32.9, 33.6, 33.7) XP 8.6 (8.9, 9.3, 9.4, 10.0, 10.0, 11.3, 11.1, 11.5, 11.3) Windows-8 4.3 (4.6, 4.2, 3.9, 4.0, 4.0, 3.7, 3.5, 3.2, 3.2) Vista 2.8 (2.8, 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.7, 3.4, 3.7, 3.6, 3.7, 3.6) Pre-XP Windows 0.8 (0.8, 0.6, 0.7, 0.7, 0.7, 0.7, 0.7, 0.8) Mac 10.3 (10.5, 9.3, 9.5, 10.1, 10.2, 10.4, 10.2, 11.3, 12.3) iPhone/iPad/iPod 31.5 (30.3, 29.7, 31.3, 28.4, 27.5, 25.9) Android 9.1 (9.0, 10.5, 9.1, 8.8, 8.3, 8.2, 7.6, 7.6, 9.4) WinPhone 0.3 (0.2, 0.3, 0.2, 0.2, 0.2, 0.2, 0.3, 0.2, 0.2) Other Mobiles 1.8 (1.6, 1.6, 1.5, 1.6, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.4) Linux 0.9 (1.0, 0.6, 0.7, 0.6, 1.0, 1.0, 0.8, 0.9, 0.7) Windows 7 peaked at 33.7% four months ago and Apple on the desktop seems to have peaked too. Android has made only slight headway in the past four months. Desktops/Laptops 57% and Mobiles/Tablets 43%. A case can be made for splitting the analysis into these two components. For this fortnight I have calculated the Hits per Visit and Pages per Visit for each operating system. For desktops/laptops it's now roughly 8 to 11 hits per visit and roughly one page per visit. Years ago it was at least 1.7 pages per visit, and back in the early days it was 3 or 4 pages per visit. These days, search engines are directing people to the correct page and people are looking at far more images without viewing the page at all. All this is especially pronounced for Androids and iPhones (etc) where I am measuring 0.6 pages per visit and only about 5 to 6 hits per visit. There is a wide distribution of course, but with the average so close to the y-axis, we are looking at huge numbers of 1 and 2 hit visits. People are looking at one or two images and that's it. The total sample size above was 26701. Browser Breakup =============== Percentages of visits for the period 16th to 31st August 2013:- Safari 37.4 (35.5, 34.8, 36.5, 34.1, 33.3, 31.9, 32.9) Chrome 31.1 (33.7, 33.3, 33.5, 32.9, 33.2, 33.3, 31.7) IE 17.5 (16.8, 17.0, 16.4, 17.3, 18.2, 20.1, 21.4) Firefox 9.4 (9.4, 8.8, 9.0, 10.5, 10.5, 10.1, 9.7, 9.8) Opera 1.8 (1.7, 2.0, 1.9, 2.1, 1.8, 1.9, 1.8, 1.6, 2.0) All Others 3.0 (2.9, 4.0, 2.7, 3.2, 3.0, 2.6, 2.6, 2.7) The sample size was 26804 visits by humans. Search Engines Share ==================== Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for August 16th to 31st, 2013:- Google 89.6 (89.1, 87.6, 87.3, 87.8, 88.6, 88.1, 86.9) Bing 5.5 (5.7, 6.5, 6.2, 6.5, 5.7, 6.6, 7.2, 7.4, 6.8) Yahoo 3.4 (3.5, 3.8, 4.4, 3.7, 3.4, 3.1, 3.4, 3.6, 3.1) All others 1.5 (1.7, 2.1, 2.1, 1.9, 2.2, 2.2, 2.5, 2.9) The share for 'Bing + Yahoo' has fallen back under 10%. The total number of searches in this sample was 17889, including 10413 of 16021 searches (65%) via Google where the search string was suppressed, allegedly for privacy reasons. The "Others" category is declining which means it is fast becoming a three horse race. Given the alliance between Yahoo and Bing it's becoming a two horse race. =============================== ============================
