Latest Stats as at 22/8/2011. ============================= These figures cover the 15-day period 1/8/2011 to 15/8/2011. The emphasis on excluding short and unrealistic visits has continued, using exactly the same tests again this fortnight to locate and exclude rubbish. A hosting outage of about 90 minutes occurred on 11th August. Two major pieces of industry news: (i) Google has bought the mobile phone section of Motorola. Motorola is a large and respected mobile phone maker in the USA, far bigger than here. Their top phones are all Androids. It's probably a much better purchase than Microsoft buying Skype. (ii) HP bought Palm a couple of years ago to get their webOS. This webOS was to be HP's big strategy to be up there with the iPad and the Android tablet. HP's tablet was released in the USA in July and sold only about 10% of what was predicted. Here in Australia the HP tablet has just been launched, exclusive to Harvey Norman stores. The Australian (20th August) reports the product has been taken off the shelves after just FOUR DAYS. In a bizarre twist, Harvey Norman sold all their stock at $100 per tablet on the Friday afternoon (SMH and Australian). The dust is still settling but this is a nightmare for HP, and echoes the difficulties that have already engulfed Nokia. Apple makes it all look so easy, but it isn't. Those mass-market consumers are not loyal or locked-in like the hapless companies that have suffered crippling delays whilst their hardware and software problems get fixed at inflated prices. Operating System Market Share ============================== For the period 1st to 15th August 2011, these percentage figures are based on visits, with earlier figures in brackets:- XP 31.4 (31.7, 32.7, 35.5, 35.6, 37.4, 37.3, 37.4, 39.2) Windows-7 29.9 (30.2, 27.5, 27.9, 28.0, 28.2, 26.4, 25.8) Vista 11.2 (11.4, 11.7, 10.5, 12.1, 12.1, 12.4, 13.6, 13.2) Other Windows 1.4 (1.2, 1.7, 1.3, 1.8, 2.0, 1.7, 1.9, 1.7) Mac 11.6 (10.9, 11.4, 11.0, 11.1, 10.3, 11.5, 11.1, 10.4) iPhone etc 8.4 (7.9, 8.8, 6.5, 5.6, 4.9, 5.5, 5.5, 4.8) Android 1.7 (1.9, 1.9, 1.9, 1.4, 1.1, 1.1, 1.0, 0.8, 0.8) Other Mobiles 3.4 (3.6, 3.4, 4.2, 3.3, 3.0, 3.0, 2.9, 2.2) Linux 1.0 (1.1, 0.8, 1.1, 1.1, 1.0, 1.0, 0.8, 0.8, 0.6) A slight decline in both Windows XP and Vista, but Windows 7 has also faltered. The previous measurement for Windows-7 was probably a little high. Apple and its iPhone/iPad goes from strength to strength but Microsoft still has 73% of the market. Windows-7, with sales now over 400 million, will soon pass Windows XP. The profit margin is extraordinary. In the Other Mobiles category, the leader is still the Blackberry. It has had continual free publicity over the last three weeks as the mobile phone of choice used to organise the rioting and looting in England. I didn't hear about anyone going looting after receiving a message on their Android. The total sample size above was 14323 visits by humans. Browser Breakup =============== Percentages of visits for the period 1st to 15th August 2011:- IE 41.2 (39.0, 41.8, 45.4, 47.0, 50.1, 47.8, 49.1, 52.4) FF 20.4 (23.4, 19.2, 19.0, 19.7, 19.0, 20.2, 20.5, 19.8) Safari 18.5 (17.8, 19.5, 16.0, 14.9, 13.4, 15.4, 15.1, 13.9) Chrome 15.3 (14.9, 15.0, 14.4, 14.3, 13.6, 12.8, 11.7, 10.9) Opera 2.3 (2.4, 2.3, 2.8, 2.2, 2.0, 1.8, 1.8, 1.4, 2.2) All Others 2.2 (2.5, 2.3, 2.4, 1.8, 1.8, 1.9, 2.0, 1.8) The market share of Safari plus Chrome exceeds that of Firefox. Either of these could easily pass Firefox if Firefox were to stumble, but in recent months Firefox has stabilised somewhat and their automatic updating is working better than previously. The sample size was 14392 visits by humans. Search Engines Share ==================== Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for August 1st to 15th, 2011:- Google 90.6 (90.5, 89.9, 90.6, 90.3, 91.8, 90.9, 90.5, 89.5) Bing 3.5 (3.6, 3.7, 3.6, 3.5, 3.2, 3.2, 3.4, 4.3, 4.1, 3.5) Yahoo 3.7 (2.8, 3.2, 3.1, 3.0, 2.5, 2.8, 3.1, 3.2, 3.1, 2.7) All others 2.2 (3.1, 3.2, 2.6, 3.1, 2.5, 3.1, 3.0, 2.9, 2.5) An odd result this time, in that Yahoo has returned a higher figure than Bing. By any marketing standards, the ongoing consumer preference for Google is amazing. The sample size above was 9993 searches. ================================ ===============================
