Above, XP is under 60% for the first time. There seems to be no limit to what people will download, the Windows-7 share is growing and will soon pass 1%. Mac at 8.5% is suspiciously high and will be looked at. Linux is the highest figure in 24 weeks, but it currently includes Android which really belongs in Others. I have not sighted Chrome, the new Google operating system, yet. The total sample size was 11511 visits by humans. Search Engines Share ==================== Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for July 1st to 15th, 2009:- Google 86.1 (was 86.0, 84.8, 85.4, 83.6, 85.6, 87.3, 86.3, 86.8) Yahoo 7.4 (was 6.5, 7.7, 7.8, 10.3, 7.8, 6.7, 6.3, 7.1, 8.0, 7.8) Microsoft 3.2 (was 4.2, 3.3, 3.1, 2.4, 2.8, 2.4, 2.9, 2.3, 2.5) All others 3.3 (was 3.2, 4.2, 3.8, 3.8, 3.8, 3.6, 4.5, 3.8) The sample size here was 7418. For all sorts of reasons, this has proven quite difficult to measure accurately and consistently. American figures claiming Google is around 65% and Yahoo is over 10% should not be accepted as correct. My own analysis of callers from the USA show Google is much higher. Very early in June, Microsoft re-badged all their search engines into one new engine named "Bing" and did their advertising campaign. The Microsoft/Bing share was up for a few weeks, but pretty much at the expense of the smaller search engines. I would venture to say that customers of Yahoo and Google have little intention of changing brands. The Bing Blip. ============== Here are some comparative percentages, with the results grouped into periods of three days to boost the sample sizes:- May 17-18-19: Bing 2.8 May 20-21-22: Bing 2.9 May 23-24-25: Bing 2.7 May 26-27-28: Bing 4.1 May 29-30-31: Bing 2.7 June 1-2-3: Bing 3.6 June 4-5-6: Bing 3.2 June 7-8-9: Bing 3.4 June 10-11-12: Bing 3.0 June 13-14-15: Bing 3.3 June 16-22: No figures available June 23-26: Bing 4.1 June 27-30: Bing 4.5 July 1-3: Bing 5.6 July 4-6: Bing 3.4 July 7-9: Bing 2.7 July 10-12: Bing 2.5 July 13-15: Bing 3.1 The result of 4.1% for May 26-27-28 is most likely just Microsoft's own testing of Bing from 24th to 29th before its release. They might even have load-tested the server room. The figures show Bing peaked late June to early July and has declined gradually since. A market share of 4% seems unsustainable. Footnote: These figures are not particularly accurate, given the sample sizes, but trends can still be seen. In addition, some of the analysis code is still settling down, but seems reasonable from mid May. Matters were not helped by someone who made 61 hits all searching for "public buses south australia" on 15th July using a fake search engine name. This inflated the "others" search engine category and ruined the calculations until this caller was disallowed. ============================== ==============================
