The sample size was 15462 visits by humans. Search Engines Share ==================== A big problem here. The previous methods of tallying tended to make Google and Microsoft a bit high (eg the 3.6% below), and Yahoo a bit low. The latest figures below are to a slightly revised method, but earlier results have not been corrected. Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for June 1st to 15th, 2010:- Google 89.7 (89.7, 90.7, 90.5, 90.1, 90.6, 89.1, 90.1, 89.6, 89.5) Yahoo 4.3 (3.7, 3.7, 3.8, 4.4, 4.5, 4.9, 4.2, 4.5, 4.8, 5.9, 5.1) Microsoft 3.1 (3.6, 3.0, 2.9, 2.7, 2.5, 3.5, 3.0, 3.1, 2.7, 3.0) All others 2.9 (2.9, 2.6, 2.8, 2.7, 2.4, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 3.0, 2.9) The sample size above was 12008 searches. Microsoft has reached a sudden turning point with the announcement that their scheme where they actually pay people to use Bing will end on 31st July. Search Engines by Country ========================= The figures below are based on the earlier method of calculation, so Yahoo is a little low, Google a little high. However, the differences between continents remains very clear. Essentially the overall result as seen here in Australia is four quite different distributions added together. Australia/NZ: Google 95%, Yahoo 2% Microsoft 2%, Others 1%. USA/Canada: Google 84%, Yahoo 7%, Microsoft 5% and Others 4%. UK/Ireland: Google 91%, Yahoo 2.0%, Microsoft 3% and Others 4%. Western Europe: Google 95%, Yahoo 1%, Microsoft 1%, Others 3%. Microsoft and Yahoo have a much larger market share in North America. No doubt there are segments of the American market where Yahoo and Bing do even better, and it is these high but unrepresentative figures you will read in the press. Yahoo is also popular in Asia, but not Bing at under 1%. Yahoo and Bing are not popular in Europe. They are especially unpopular in Scandinavian countries. Australian surfers are very pro-Google, and do not support their local search engines like in other English-speaking countries. If you have tried Sensis and WebWombat you will understand why. More countries analysis next time. ============================ =============================
