Latest Stats as at 17/3/2013 ============================= These figures cover the 15-day period 1/3/2013 to 15/3/2013. This fortnight sees an increase in visits from smartphones and a corresponding decrease in visits from desktops. This is the same effect as the bias that occurs over Christmas, but to a lesser extent and without an explanation. Neither Windows-8 nor the Winphone are taking the world by storm. Something I can't measure, but if Facebook offends their users, will they go the same way as MySpace? When you see things like "Facebook is so uncool now" on the net, the alarm bells can start ringing. Users are fickle to say the least. Operating System Market Share ============================== For the period 1st to 15th of March, these percentage figures are based on visits, with earlier figures in brackets:- Windows-7 34.9 (35.2, 35.1, 34.1, 32.0, 32.1, 35.3, 36.3) XP 13.6 (17.7, 18.5, 16.9, 14.2, 14.2, 17.2, 16.0, 16.5) Vista 4.3 (4.1, 4.5, 4.4, 4.7, 4.5, 5.3, 5.3, 5.2, 5.1) Windows-8 2.5 (2.4, 2.2, 1.9, 1.7, 1.3, 0.8, 0.9, 0.3) Pre-XP Windows 0.7 (0.8, 0.8, 1.1, 1.2, 1.0, 1.0, 0.7) Mac 11.9 (12.3, 12.3, 13.2, 11.8, 11.9, 12.4, 13.0, 12.5) iPhone/iPad/iPod 23.5 (20.0, 19.0, 19.8, 25.2, 24.7, 19.8) Android 6.1 (4.6, 5.5, 5.5, 5.8, 6.6, 4.8, 4.5, 4.6, 4.6) WinPhone 0.2 (0.2, 0.4, 0.2, 0.3. 0.3, 0.2) Other Mobiles 1.7 (2.0, 2.1, 2.3, 2.3, 2.4, 2.3, 1.8, 2.4) Linux 0.8 (0.8, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 0.9, 0.8, 0.8, 0.7) We have a drop in XP and a jump in smartphones and tablets. Windows-8 has gone from 0.1% to 2.5% in 18 weeks, very slow. I hope to compare this with the uptake of Vista and Windows 7. Should Microsoft pull the plug on Windows 8? Where is that proverbial queue of Windows-8 shoppers outside Harvey Norman, all upgrading their Windows-XP and Windows-7 machines? The total sample size above was 21990. Browser Breakup =============== Percentages of visits for the period 1st to 15th March 2013:- Safari 31.2 (27.8, 27.1, 29.2, 33.6, 33.3, 28.6, 29.9, 30.2) Chrome 30.7 (30.9, 30.2, 28.6, 26.4, 27.2, 28.5, 27.5, 27.2) IE 23.7 (26.3, 26.6, 25.9, 23.8, 21.4, 25.2, 26.2, 26.8) Firefox 10.4 (10.8, 11.9, 11.6, 12.3, 13.6, 14.1, 12.8, 12.2) Opera 2.0 (2.3, 2.4, 2.4, 2.0, 2.5, 2.1, 2.1, 2.1, 1.8, 2.3) All Others 2.0 (1.9, 1.8, 2.4, 1.9, 2.1, 1.6, 1.5, 1.5, 1.4) Safari has taken first place back from Chrome. This is because of the Operating System figures given above. Virtually all iPhones and iPads run Safari. The sample size was 22081 visits by humans. Search Engines Share ==================== Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for March 1st to 15th, 2013:- Google 87.3 (87.8, 87.0, 86.7, 86.4, 84.3, 89.9, 89.2, 89.4) Bing 6.3 (5.4, 5.1, 5.6, 5.3, 5.5, 2.7, 3.3, 3.5, 3.3, 2.8) Yahoo 3.6 (3.8, 4.4, 4.0, 4.8, 5.4, 4.0, 4.2, 3.9, 4.1, 3.4) All others 2.8 (2.9, 3.5, 3.7, 3.5, 4.7, 3.4, 3.3, 3.2, 3.1) Bing now measures at over 6% market share. This is double their previous figure, consistently low over several years. By comparison, Yahoo is still chugging along, a shadow of their former glory. I don't know what promotions Bing is running to capture searchers, but the problem for Google is that the other search engines are catching up. Basically they have reached that "good enough" point, which is where the market was with Internet Explorer a couple of years ago, and similarly there was no point in changing from Windows-XP to Linux when XP was "good enough". Personally I find the rest well behind Google, but the finer points of searching don't worry most people. The total number of searches in this sample was 13564, including 5011 of 11838 searches (42%) via Google where the search string was suppressed allegedly for privacy reasons. This suppression (or use of "secure search") varies across browsers - Firefox is now 72%, Chrome 59%, Internet Explorer 26% and Safari 16%. Nostalgia Corner ================ I found some old log files from 2007 and have processed two week's worth through the current version of the log file processor. The format of the log file has not changed for a decade or more, so it was plain sailing. Picture 2007 like this. Windows XP 77%, Vista 4% and rising, Mac 5% and all mobiles 0.3%. No iPhones, iPads or Androids. Next, Internet Explorer 78%, Firefox 16% (and rising) and Safari 4%. No Chrome yet but Opera on 0.9%. Search engines are Google 85%, Yahoo 7%, MSN 3% and others 6% (including some old favourites like Altavista, Ask and AOL). =============================== ============================
