Ruth Bernard's family came to Australia as refugees from Nazism and, in writing the book, she has drawn on some of her family's experiences and stories. She grew up in Tasmania, where she went to school and university, but has lived in Sydney now for many years. She writes, paints, sculpts and walks her cocker spaniel, Charly.
